What is the what?

“What is the what?”
By Dave eggers

Irony is found in many works of literature. In Dave Eggers “what is the what”, irony is used in many ways. In the opening scene the narrator is robbed in his house in Atlanta. Irony is used in quotes all through out the story. My first example of irony is, “I want to be in Kakuma, where I lived in a hut of plastic and sandbags and owned one pair of pants.” Another example of irony is when the narrator was 11 is Sudan. “Come to me, children! I am your mother! Come to me; and when they drew close enough she lifted an automatic rifle and shot through the chests and stomachs of the boys.” The last example of irony is when he was getting robbed. “And because we’re brothers and all, ill teach you a lesson; don’t you know you shouldn’t open your door to strangers.” Those are all examples of irony in the story “what is the what” by Dave eggers.

Four teenagers shot in Roxbury

According to Milton J. Valencia author of "The Boston Globe" "Four teenagers were shot last night as they sat on the front steps of a Wardman Road home in Roxbury, a place where witnesses said they have hung out peaceably on many summer days"

First responders say the teenagers, "who were not identified, were taken to local hospitals, where they were treated for injuries not considered life-threatening." Police officials say the teens were from 15 to 16 years of age.

Witnesses say "They sit on the steps every day, but they don't do anything wrong," another witness , a neighbor who has three children.Say's "Nobody ever bothers them."

Police said the shooting was the latest involving young people in what has become a troubling trend. "It's unfortunate, but more and more over the last few years, that's what we're seeing, 15-, 16-, 17-year-old with guns, trying to resolve their problems that way," police Superintendent Rafael Ruiz said last night at the scene.

Ruiz a Boston police superintendent who was on the scene said "the shooting occurred just before 9:30 p.m. The victims were shot in the legs."

Ruiz also told reporters that "two of the teenagers were taken to Boston Medical Center and two to Children's Hospital."

Last night, police detectives continued to investigate. Ruiz told investigators that "the Boston police department have not yet determined whether the victims knew the shooter."

As of Aug. 3, there were 136 nonfatal shootings in 2008, compared with 141 at the same time last year.

The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle

In the novel "The Glass Castle", the title relates to the family and there father in the story. Characteristics of glass castles are they would be breakable; they might shatter and be destroyed; and they are transparent. Since there transparent, they would make you feel very vulnerable; any body could see in and watch what ever you may be doing. The characteristics of a regular castle are they are very safe and reliable; they could protect you from the elements. However living in a glass castle would be unsafe because if you were in a storm you might get rocks through your walls. Those are the characteristics of a glass castle and a regular castle. The idea of the glass castle relates to there lives in that there lives are as vulnerable as the castle would be.
